“Tyson Barrie is a brutal defender”

This is why he’s the perfect fit for Toronto...

The Leafs have 3 number 1 d-men...Reilly, Muzzin, and Barrie. An all-star group of forwards as well. Dubas has assembled the greatest team ever in the cap era. - James Tanner, summer of 2019

Barrie was pretty good his last year in CO, other than that pretty meh as far as a defensive point goes.

Pens are like in the top 5 for fewest goals allowed, so D isnt a problem, scoring goals consistently is. If Barrie can help that, make the move of any G on the Pens roster.

Leafs look like a team trying to get their coach fired.

It’s certainly something we as Pens fans are familiar with.

A couple crazy stats:
Pens PK has only allowed 5 goals all year....and has scored 4. (per DeFabo)

Jared McCann has 18 goals and 29 points in 50 games as a Pen.

McCann has been really god damn good. He’s definitely been the better player out of him and Bjugstad.

The Pens clearly won because TOR isn't a good team.

JJ is on a two game point streak lmao. Geno hasn't looked this good in a while. Sometimes it's like when Sid is out, it re-centers him and Geno. I miss the days when one would have such a dominant shift that the other came out and tried to 1UP the last guy. I also really love the way that Jarry handles the puck. This would have been a different game if he let in the fluke shot in the 1st period.

I don't know what all the hate on Schultz is about. When Letang went out for almost all of 2016, Schultz stepped in and put up over 50 points.

The injury bug has hit all parts of this team. The goalies have been fortunate so far. Gotta keep Jarry because Murray’s past health history says so. Jarrys a bargain at his salary given his play this year. No need to help Toronto 😉

The bigger story should be can the storm be weathered until Sid returns? Definitely playing like a team now and no panic.

Because he hasn't played like that since.

Yes Toronto isn't playing well, but scoring the first goal was just as important.

Galchenyuk is also on a two game point streak. They are smoking hot right now.

The problem I see with Schultz is his next contract. If he would accept a basic cost of living raise, say $5.5M I say okay. I think that is his value. I just don't see him agreeing to that.

I see the fit here for Toronto. Jarry would definitely upgrade their backup situation. I also see how you may consider Barrie a slight upgrade over Schultz. So, for THIS year I think it may make sense. BUT, when you said about re-signing Barrie over Shultz all bets are off. Barrie will be looking for 6-7-8 million a year, and also be looking for term, maybe 6 or 7 years. This would be an awful signing for a guy who is a disaster in his own end. Leafs are desperate, Pens should be looking at something better than Barrie upgrade from Shultz. IMO...that upgrade is minimal.....and comes with the risk or re-upping him at a killer level.

It's not too early to start to think about who goes in the expansion draft of '21. Unless there is another MAF out there, Jarry may be the best goalie available. I will admit I don't follow other teams nearly as close as I follow Pittsburgh. I just don't know who is out there. No matter what, Seattle will be interested in him, he is solid, young and from Western Canada.

Too bad for them they just didn’t pickup DeSmith off waivers. I’d also go with a DeSmith/jj, C prospect or mid tier pick, for muzzin. I think we need to drop jj before we have two left D on similar contracts playing the same caliber.

Jack Johnson has more goals than Barrie and a way better +/-. Johnson for Barrie and a 1st

IDK, I think it's still too early considering how they handled it last time. I think GMJR is comfortable sitting on his goalie depth for now.

Don't forget also that DeSmith has double the cap hit of Jarry. He is arguably the better goaltender but not that much better. Unless Murray or Jarry sustains a long term injury I don't think we will see DeSmith back with the team this season. On the other hand, he could be the one who would be traded (with no retention of salary).

If I'm Rutherford I'm not making a move (on defense) at this point in time. Why fuk with the chemistry when the team is playing so well through all these injuries? I'd add a forward if a deal made sense, but I don't see anybody wanting Galch or Bjug (who knows how long he'll be out). Seems like too much tinkering. Let things continue to gel.

Secondly, I wouldn't move Jarry until I know what I'm looking at with Murray's deal. I'd let this season play out with Murray/Jarry tandem. If Murray goes down long term, I do not believe DeSmith can handle starter duty for weeks or months at a time.

I don’t think we should be experimenting with Barrie and goalie health during our window. I don’t think we should take this period for granted. We never know when the next career ending injury could strike. Barrie is doing nothing for the Leafs. When healthy we are 100% a cup contender (despite what some said this offseason) which means we need to keep depth at every position, including between the pipes, and we shouldn’t be unloading pending free agents unless it keeps us competitive

What’s the best case scenario swapping Schultz for Barrie, Stanley cup aside? He goes off, we fall short, and then he wants $9MM a year until he’s 36? 😂 ok cool. What happens if he does the exact same thing the following season? No thanks

GMJR was able to keep his term to 3 years last time. I think he’s able to keep Schultz this offseason between 5-6MM for 3-4 years but it will come at the cost of a NMC. I don’t think this is another Orpik situation

Good points. GMJR might already have a good grasp on what MM is looking for and he’s shown a history to be loyal as has Lemieux. Because of the cup history I think MM stays and that we shouldn’t deplete our goaltending depth, not now anyways
